Just following up on my earlier post— is there any explanation about color schemes? What are the instructions for using them? Maybe they've been around for a long time and I didn't notice? Now I see that when you clone the Relume Style Guide there's a color-schemes embed in the global styles. I just want to know what best practices are here, what am I supposed to be doing? What's the step by step for taking advantage of this? Is there a tutorial somewhere? Matt J.?
Nick J. yeah great callout - we have definitely missed the mark as far as being able to provide adequate resources around color schemes and there's a lot of "reasons" for that. I've actually been working with them a lot recently and I'm building up some best practices and some "catch ya's" to look out for as well. But to get you unblocked and some immediate direction now, we do have this unpublished loom video that might help: https://www.loom.com/share/36c4d72d91264453af1beae10bd49a42 It definitely doesn't answer all of your questions, but I do think that it can bring you from zero knowledge to some knowledge.
Thanks. It just seems like a lot of information is definitely missing. I mean I was really confused and it cost me a lot of time, actually. I've seen you reply with this Loom video to other people asking similar questions for awhile now. So what's the goal here? Are we supposed to add these color-scheme classes as a combo class to all of these styles e.g. background, foreground, text color, etc. everywhere? Also, should we be thinking about tying these color schemes to component variants? It just seems like so many combo classes are going to be created this way. I guess I don't have to use any of these color schemes classes and variables right? It's just that, I had no idea what was happening when I used the Site Builder's Style Guide and Design functionality. It's not clear how color schemes 1–6 are even created? I'm really frustrated that this rolled out like this with like no/little/or hidden explanation you guys. Am I wrong?
Nick J. yeah, totally understand how frustrating this must be, left in the dark like this. This is definitely not something we want for our veteran users like yourself. I can DM you some more details - but the short answer is that the landscape shifts quickly and with a library as complex and as expansive as ours, its not always super easy for us to pivot in different directions. Webflow came out with variable modes about a week or so after we released style guide export - or at least it was very close to the same time - when all of the decisions were already made. Generally, you should only be applying a color scheme combo class to the section - not individual elements - which is where the custom code comes in. You would however, just need to flip the button classes around within that section depending on your color scheme. As mentioned above, I've been really digging into color schemes and how to use them, how to work around them, and how to apply them in Figma and Webflow using some of the new features that these tools have released since we've released color schemes and will put together a more comprehensive video. But I'm happy to try to do whatever I can on my side to get you unblocked as soon as possible so that we're not waiting for a video to be created - so I'll send you a DM with some more details and if you wanted to jump on a call or something, we can just hash through some of the blockers or we can async as you dig into it more. Our mission is to make designers faster, not waste their time and for that, we're very sorry you wasted time trying to unpack something that should have just been more clearly communicated in the first place.
