How often do you add new color schemes to a project during or after the build?

thinking back on previous builds - how often are you adding new color schemes to a project? Early or mid-build, or after a build has been live for awhile - at any point - do you need to add new color schemes? I understand that maybe the current color scheme system is pretty confusing so my question isn't whether you are able to change them or not, its more of the desire to actually change them.

I've only done a handful of projects but they’ve all required updating color schemes. I’ve found that once in use, issues arise: the color values may not harmonize well together, need new color for impact in the design, client wants changes once colors as set, etc.

yeah makes sense - but are you saying editing existing imported color schemes (color-scheme-1, 2, 3) for example, or are you wanting/needing to add a color-scheme-4?

Both issues have come up. For me, it’s rare that an entire site gets built-out in Relume, or even Figma for that matter.

So for both portfolio pieces and actual client sites, I would change color schemes because I would duplicate a site and update it for a different business theme overall and add that brand styling. I would do this for both pitching the clients, portfolio pieces, or even brand refreshes. Hopefully it answers your question, but yeah, it’s really useful for me, especially in things like publish, now. Well, I still primarily use Wix. I have to go in and manually update each color, primary secondary tertiary and action colors, buttons, etc. and it’s a pain in the ass.

yeah I guess I was trying to get to the bottom of whether or not we over complicated the color schemes logic around classes. It feels like one assumption (maybe it wasn't an assumption either!) that was made is that color schemes would evolve/change during the lifecycle of a project. So being able to expand on the color schemes, and swap said color scheme into a project was made very quick (generally - again, I realize its still confusing). But because of this, we've made color schemes really rigid and not webflow-native. Just wondering what other's experience has been with using color schemes overall besides the pain of understanding the overall system - but like, lets say you do understand the system, where are the sharp edges? I've found a couple and I'll document them.

so far in my experience (not yet proven) is that once I have set my color schemes, (the actual color variable collection in webflow) I'm not adding to that collection. I might be swapping out primitives or maybe I'm tweaking a primitive, but I'm not going from having 3 color schemes, to suddenly having 5, to eventually have 8 different color schemes. Its a design system that is usually explored, battle tested via other tools (figma, whatever) and once I've gone to Webflow and imported them, I'm just using them, not expanding them.

I've added additional schemes at points to give some variety of different visuals for landing page work and extended the logic on some projects to have additional elements like tabs or secondary colours to support the rest of the dynamic things to make the schemes more useful.
