Protecting forms from spam without the "i'm a robot" recaptcha box

Is there any way to protect a form from spam without adding the "I'm a robot" recaptcha box? I don't like how it ruins the design.
I'd be fine with a recaptcha that shows up after the user presses submit, but I don't know if that's possible?
