Hopefully quick question for you guys, why are the Relume buttons default set to use Typography > Breaking > Line > Normal?
This makes buttons resize in height to accommodate changing VP size when the button text breaks. This can make for inconsistent button heights based on their contents.
This seems like VERY uncommon design principal to me. I would have expected that buttons must have the same height (either in fixed PX or REM) and their widths should be variable (either in VP and / or REM depending on if you’re going for more of an app experience (e.g. 2 buttons than fill the available width in a grid) or a site experience (e.g. 2 buttons with alignment relative to VP and sizing relative to their contents). For instance in the app experience (and possible web mobile), I would want the button to be full-width minus margin and then the text contents would shrink to fit on 1 line, never breaking to 2+ lines.
All that being said, I am VERY new to Webflow, Relume, and website design in general. Can you help me understand what I’m missing?
Thanks!
for this specific use case, these are just default settings of Webflow. We haven't specifically modified them. You are also likely speaking to a unique use case - in the hundreds of websites that I've built, I've never once had to adjust the height of a button or worry too much about the wrapping of button text. If anything, I usually go back to the drawing board on the words being used inside of a button before I even think about putting constraints on the button as proposed.
The other option, and one that you are likely expecting is that you could use the fluid responsive strategy. Again, its not automatically built into our components because quite frankly, not all websites have such requirements - but in cases where something like fluid responsive makes sense - you could easily implement that using the Finsweet chrome extension, and get the desired result you were expecting (font size shrinks, within a set parameter to fit the button).
Hope that answers the question for you at some level but if not please do fire back at me.
Really appreciate your perspective - especially as a new user to Webflow and Relume - its invaluable - I love that you are questioning literally everything - so good! 💪
Thanks for the reply! Seems like I must be doing something very strange then if I’m having an issue that you guys never have. I’ll take a short Loom later and send it over so you can tell me what I’m doing wrong.
yeah absolutely, would love some visuals to the issues you send through - anytime you can if you wouldn't mind attaching a preview/read-only link, it helps a ton!
