Webflow's Image Compression: AVIF vs WEBP

At a glance

The post asks why Webflow changed image compression files to AVIF instead of WEBP. The community members discuss this change, noting that AVIF is a new file format that has become the industry standard. They also discuss whether there is a way to compress images uploaded to the CMS without manually uploading them to the library first. Some community members indicate that there is no quick way to do this, while others suggest exploring the "content editor" mode or giving clients full access to the account. However, there is no explicitly marked answer in the comments.

Webflow changed image compression files to be AVIF vs WEBP files? Why?

hard to say really - it was a new file format that was rising up and now has become the new industry standard.

Is there a way to compress images that I upload to my CMS?

without manually first uploading them to the library, opening the link and redownloading each one...

There isn’t a quick way to compress CMS images at this point…

Seems illogical to me that the CMS images are treated so differently to those in the assets panel

Wait I just found out you can !!

Does the client have the ability to do this in the editor though?

I have no idea, you’ll have to check yourself 😊

I couldn't find it 😞

what about inviting them as a content editor and they access the designer in editor mode?

versus just ?edit

I didn't know there was a content editor. I'll look into it. Thanks

they technically have full access to the site but I tell them to use the editor so nothing gets messed up

yeah I think Webflow is trying to get away from having that editor experience and providing "content only editing" within the designer to make for consistent UI.

Got it. It's a great idea.
How I work is that I give my clients full access to the account. Is there a way for them to go into "content only editing" mode?
