Figma plugin issue with importing wireframes as component instances

At a glance

The community member is experiencing an issue with the Figma plugin not importing wireframes as component instances, but instead importing them as regular unlinked frames. This issue occurs in both the latest Figma starter and the previous version, and regardless of the Site Builder project. Another community member suggests this change was intentional to support editing in Site Builder, and provides a link to more information about it. The community members discuss the possibility of reattaching the components, and the response indicates that the ideal workflow is to detach them on import and turn them into "local" components, as modifying the "master component" could cause issues. The community members acknowledge they can work with this workflow, even though it initially seemed like something was broken.

Useful resources

Currently having an issue with the Figma plugin not importing wireframes as component instances; they only import as regular unlinked frames. This occurs in both the latest Figma starter and the previous version, and also regardless of which Site Builder project I try. No error pop ups showing in Figma but there are errors in the console.

Hey @Sylvain Girard I noticed this, too. I believe this changed after the ability to edit sections in site builder. If you edit items in site builder they are I grouped in Figma I believe.

@Sylvain Girard Yeah that was done intentionally to help support editing in Site Builder as Aurelien mentions. You can read more about it here:

Can we reattach them?

sure, I think the ideal workflow is that you would detach them on import regardless of this technical reason - you'd turn it into a "local" component and reuse across your project. There are other issues with modifying the "master component" that would likely cause issues in your file. I do understand how some designers were styling all of the components ahead of import and then you'd have essentially a design being "generated" - its just another way of doing things. This may change in the future but its not on our immediate roadmap.

I can work with it. Just threw me off like something was broken for a second. Thanks!
