Designing in Figma: Navigating the Pros and Cons for a Web Design Agency

At a glance

A community member starting a web design agency questions whether using Figma is necessary in their workflow, as they find it time-consuming compared to working directly in Webflow. They're particularly concerned about client expectations and whether the extra design step in Figma adds value.

Other community members emphasize that clients expect to see designs in proper design software, explaining that Figma is crucial for testing different design ideas, including typography, spacing, colors, and interactions before implementation. They point out that Webflow is for implementing designs, not for ideation. The original poster acknowledges this advice and decides to learn Figma properly, with another community member offering support and noting that Figma is more intuitive than Adobe products.

I'm looking for some guidance on designing in Figma first. I understand the basics of Figma and can click around enough to make things look okay. But I just spent several hours on a navbar... I could have imported the wireframes into Webflow and styled them in that time. Of course, it wouldn't take long to style a navbar if I had more experience.

I know that Figma is the industry standard for design and prototyping. But I am just starting a web design agency, and I am a one-man show. I wonder if I need to add the extra step of Figma design. Especially considering that Relume-based Figma designs cannot be directly imported into Webflow.

Do clients expect a Figma design?
Am I missing something in the Figma step that clients find valuable?
Should I bite the bullet and learn Figma?

Right now, I think I can show the Relume wireframes to the client for that part of the process.

I sincerely appreciate any guidance you can give me!

If you want to offer clients design services, yes they would expect and should expect to see designs in a design software!

If you simply go from wireframes to Webflow, when do you try out different ideas and see what works best? In terms of font sizes, spacing, colours, assets, use of motifs, interactions, etc. - it’s important to spend time testing your ideas and verifying if they work before you go ahead and build.

Webflow is for implementing designs, not for ideating. Hope that makes sense!

, thank you so much for your input. It all makes perfect sense. I started my day today with all that in mind and was determined to use Figma for a website. However, I quickly ran into problems because I didn't know how to use Figma well enough. I guess it's time to learn.

I’m sure you can learn quickly, I think it’s a much more intuitive program than any Adobe ones. If you are stuck on anything, feel free to message me!!
